What Course Recognition Actually Covers: Programme, Cohort and Award

The word 'recognised' can refer to different things in training information. It may describe an institution, an award, a particular programme or its relationship with a professional organisation. Before relying on the word, ask exactly what has been recognised, by whom and for which purpose.
Start with the named subject of recognition
A provider can offer several programmes with different purposes and outcomes. A statement about one programme does not automatically apply to every course in the catalogue. Record the full programme title, awarding organisation, delivery format and intake you are considering.
Ask whether recognition applies to that exact programme and cohort. If teaching takes place through a partner, at another location or through a changed delivery format, ask whether the same recognition arrangements apply. The answer should be specific enough to keep with your enrolment records.
Distinguish an award from a professional decision
An educational award records completion of a programme under the awarding organisation's arrangements. Professional membership or accreditation involves a separate decision by the relevant body. Completion of a course may contribute evidence towards an application without automatically completing every part of that application.
Ask what further evidence may be needed for the route you intend to follow. Training, practice experience, supervision and other requirements should be understood as parts of a process. Do not treat a marketing phrase as a substitute for the current application criteria.
Check the scope directly
Use the professional body's current information and, where necessary, request written clarification. Include the programme details in your question. A general enquiry such as 'Is this college accepted?' can produce an answer that is too broad for your actual decision.
If you receive conflicting information, send the relevant wording to both parties and ask them to explain the difference. This is particularly useful when a brochure has been updated or when an old web page remains accessible. Keep the clarification rather than relying on a telephone conversation alone.
Keep a recognition record
A small folder can hold the programme specification, recognition statement, correspondence and enrolment terms. Name the files with the programme and date. These records can be useful later when you prepare a professional application or need to explain the training you completed.

Frequently asked questions
Does recognition guarantee a job?
No such guarantee should be inferred. Employers and other organisations make their own decisions and may have additional criteria.
Does individual membership accredit a college?
Individual professional status and provider recognition are different matters. Check each through the relevant published information.
