Qualifications from Another Country: Preparing a Clear Evidence Pack

Training completed in another country can be difficult to assess from an award title alone. A clear evidence pack helps explain the programme, the awarding organisation and the experience associated with it. The receiving professional body decides what it can consider; a well-organised pack makes that discussion more precise.

Describe the qualification accurately

Record the original award title, awarding organisation, institution, dates and delivery format. Keep the original wording alongside any translated description. Avoid replacing the title with an Irish qualification name unless an appropriate recognition process has expressly established that equivalence.

A course transcript and programme specification can provide detail that a certificate does not. Ask the provider for official documents describing content, assessment and practice components relevant to the route you want to pursue.

Clarify translation and verification requirements

Before arranging translations, ask which documents require them and what form is accepted. Requirements may differ between professional bodies and other organisations. A translation prepared for one purpose may not be sufficient for another.

Check how copies and statements should be verified. If the institution has closed or changed its name, identify the organisation responsible for its records. Keep any official explanation of that change with the evidence.

Explain experience in understandable categories

If your record uses unfamiliar terms, provide a concise explanation with supporting documentation. Distinguish taught study, supervised practice, general employment and professional development. Do not combine them into a single total that obscures what the activity involved.

Where the receiving body uses a particular log or template, ask how your existing records should be mapped to it. Describe gaps honestly and seek guidance about alternatives where an original document cannot be obtained.

Keep separate decisions separate

Educational recognition, professional membership, employment eligibility and any applicable statutory requirements are different questions. An answer to one does not automatically settle the others. Direct each question to the organisation responsible for that decision.

Avoid relying on informal comparisons from social media or another applicant's experience. Their training, date of application or intended role may differ from yours. Ask a question that includes the facts of your own programme.

Frequently asked questions

Does an overseas professional membership transfer automatically?

Do not assume automatic transfer. Ask ICPHAA which route and evidence can be considered for your circumstances.

Should I translate every document immediately?

Confirm the receiving body's requirements first. This helps avoid unnecessary cost and ensures the documents are prepared in an accepted form.
